Formative Assessment in the Classroom, the Curriculum, and the Culture of Schools

As California educators enact the instructional shifts called for by the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), formative assessment has reemerged as a key practice for moving students toward college and career readiness.

This FREE, one-day, hands-on workshop, sponsored by Policy Analysis for California Education (PACE), will focus on questions of practice: how can educators embed formative assessment into the classroom and the curriculum, and how can administrators and district leaders embed formative assessment into the culture of schools?

The day will begin with a panel discussion featuring leaders in the field of assessment; interactive breakout sessions will then provide opportunities for hands-on engagement with a variety of assessment tasks and formative assessment practices as well as focused discussions of practical implications.

Participants in this conference will:

  • explore curriculum-embedded approaches to formative assessment aligned to the CCSS and NGSS;
  • discuss implications for instruction, curriculum, and professional development at the school and district levels; and
  • envision strategies for creating school and district cultures that support rich formative assessment practices in every classroom.

Participation in vertical teams including teachers, administrators, instructional leaders (e.g., coaches, curriculum directors) and district leaders is strongly encouraged.

Breakout sessions will be offered for the following subject areas and grade bands:

Math, grades 3-5
Math, grades 6-8
Math, grades 9-12
Science, grades 6-8
Science, grades 9-12
ELA, grades 6-12
History/Social Studies, grades 6-12

Presenters and facilitators will represent several leading assessment and research centers, including Stanford Center for Assessment, Learning, and Equity (SCALE), Institute for Learning at the University of Pittsburgh (IFL), National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards, & Student Testing (CRESST), SRI International, University of California, Berkeley, WestEd, California Office to Reform Education (CORE).
