University of California, Los Angeles

Anna J. Markowitz is an assistant professor in the UCLA School of Education and Information Studies. She previously was a research assistant professor at the Center for the Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning; an affiliate of EdPolicyWorks; a middle school teacher with Teach for America; and a supervisor of student teachers at Boston College’s Lynch School of Education. Markowitz is interested in how policies shape the contexts of human development; in particular, she explores the links between policy, the skills and attitudes of the adults children interact with, and children’s development. She uses quantitative methods to explore how policy-alterable features of early childhood education programs impact children’s experiences with their teachers and caregivers and thereby exacerbate or ameliorate income-based disparities in children’s outcomes. Her current focus and projects include the study of early education in Louisiana; teacher turnover in Head Start; and food insecurity in early childhood. Markowitz received her MA in developmental and educational psychology from Boston College; her MPP from Georgetown University; and her PhD in psychology from Georgetown University.
