Gregory Hooks is professor and chair of sociology in the Department of Sociology at McMaster University. He was previously the Boeing Distinguished Professor of Environmental Sociology in the Department of Sociology at Washington State University, where he was also chair of the faculty senate and a faculty member for over 20 years. He was previously a Soros Senior Justice Fellow with the Open Society Institute. His research and teaching has addressed such issues as regional impacts and politics of U.S. defense; environmental legacies of war making and militarism; variation in social policy commitment across U.S. states and counties; and the spatial dimensions of the U.S.’s commitment to mass incarceration. Although the topics are diverse, Hooks focuses on the study of spatial inequality and the political dynamics associated with this inequality. Hooks received his PhD in sociology from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
