Paul DeHart Hurd

Paul DeHart Hurd was professor emeritus in the Graduate School of Education at Stanford University. Hurd was a pioneering figure in science education. He began his career as a high school biology teacher and later chaired the Science Department at Menlo School and Junior College, now Menlo College in California. In 1951, he joined Stanford, focusing on developing science programs for early adolescents. Hurd authored nine books and over 200 articles on science education, including the landmark Biological Education in American Secondary Schools, 1890–1960. He introduced the term "scientific literacy," emphasizing the importance of understanding science for effective citizenship. He leaves a legacy honored by awards such as the National Middle Level Science Teachers Association's Paul DeHart Hurd Award for Exemplary Middle Level Science Teaching and Leadership. Hurd earned his PhD in education from Stanford University. He also received honorary doctor of science degrees from Ball State University, Drake University, and the University of Northern Colorado.
