William Welsh's work focuses on the social consequences of new forms of schooling. He was awarded a Social Science Research Council International Dissertation Research Fellowship in 2015 and named a 2015–16 Berkeley Empirical Legal Studies Graduate Fellow. He received a PhD in sociology from the University of California, Berkeley.
