Russell Rumberger is a Professor Emeritus in the Gevirtz School of Education at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he served on the faculty from 1987 to 2015. His research has focused on several areas of education including education and work, disadvantaged students, school effectiveness, and education policy. Dr. Rumberger is widely published and regarded for his research on school dropouts. He was director of the California Dropout Research Project, was a member of the National Research Council’s Committee on Increasing High School Students’ Engagement and Motivation to Learn, and served on the panel of the U.S. Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences that produced the Dropout Prevention Practice Guide. He is also author of the book Dropping Out: Why Students Drop Out of High School and What Can Be Done About It. Professor Rumberger holds a Ph.D. in education from Stanford University.
